Passiflora (translated as passion flower) is a woody liana up to 10 m long that grows in the tropical and subtropical regions of South and North America. The plant got its name from the Spanish missionaries, according to whom the beauty of its flowers, appearing from the inconspicuous buds, could only be compared to the crucifixion of Christ. The native name of passionflower, at least among the Aztecs, was snake's tongue (they used it for snakebites). Passionflower contains three main types of chemicals: alkaloids, glycosides and flavonoids (mainly chrysin, which is associated with its calming effect). Also isolated are natural serotonin and maltol - a chemical with a proven sedative effect. The herb is used by phytotherapists for anxiety, insomnia, hysteria, high blood pressure, rapid pulse, pains of a different nature, muscle and joint problems, alcoholism, cough, asthma, menopause, as an aphrodisiac.
